Territory Acknowledgment

I respectfully acknowledge that I live and work as a visitor on the unceded ancestral territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees), Wyomilth (Esquimalt), and W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich) peoples of the Coast Salish Nation.

Kathryn Pybus

My approach is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and respect for each client's unique story. I strive to create a safe and accepting space that encourages self-awareness, self-expression, and natural processes for personal growth. Through guidance and practical tools, I help individuals overcome obstacles and implement new coping skills for more effective daily functioning. Together, we work to address unwanted behaviors by understanding the interplay of temperament, attachment, adverse life experience, familial dynamics, and maladaptive management strategies.

My theoretical approach is integrative, drawing from a handful of orientations. I have specialized training in enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy for eating disorders (CBT-E), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), expressive art therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and somatic interventions. My clinical practice areas include disordered eating, anxiety, depression, issues of emotional regulation, interpersonal issues, self-confidence, body image, and body dysmorphia.

I interpret dysfunctional behaviors as expressions (or symptoms) of invisible complex issues. It is not uncommon for individuals struggling with disordered eating, exercise compulsion, or body dysmorphia to have suffered past trauma or to report comorbid anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and attentional challenges. Taking a holistic approach to healing deeper issues alongside current, maladaptive behaviours can lead to long-term recovery and improved overall well-being.

Again and again, research indicates that the therapeutic relationship is the leading contributor to a client's success in therapy. I offer confidential, no-cost 20-minute consultations to ensure a suitable fit between myself and the client. Please don't hesitate to contact me directly to schedule a consultation.

Kathryn Pybus Counselling Mental Health Therapy Provider in Victoria, BC

Professional Journey

Having undergone personal struggles with concurrent eating and mood disorders, I am deeply committed to helping others find inner peace and healing. I founded and led Shift, a peer-support group for eating disorders, and subsequently pursued a Master of Counselling Psychology: Art Therapy degree to enhance my knowledge and skills. During my clinical practicum, I co-developed and facilitated emotion-focused art therapy groups for bariatric patients, which provided me with valuable experience in facilitating long-term healing of individuals' relationships with food and body. I am committed to continuing my education and professional development to stay current with the best treatment practices. I also practice what I preach by applying the same guidance and interventions given to clients to myself, prioritizing my physical and mental health, and nurturing my social connections and hobbies.
